Choosing a disability support provider in Newcastle & the Hunter
The right provider is not simply the one with the longest service list. A good fit should understand what the participant wants from support and be clear about how the arrangement will work.
Questions worth asking
- Do you provide the type of support I actually need?
- Do you have workers available in my area and at the times I need?
- How do you approach worker matching?
- What happens if the regular worker is unavailable?
- How will communication and changes to support be handled?
- What costs, travel arrangements and cancellation terms apply?
- Which funding arrangements do you accept?
Think about the worker match
Skills and experience matter, but ongoing support is also a relationship. Communication style, reliability, interests, personality and how the participant prefers to be supported can all matter.
Check the service area
A provider that regularly works in Newcastle and the Hunter may have better practical knowledge of local activities, services, travel times and community options.
Understand the funding arrangement
Make sure the provider accepts the participant’s funding type and that the proposed support is appropriate under the participant’s plan and current NDIS guidance.
Start with a conversation
A first enquiry should give both the participant and provider a chance to decide whether the arrangement looks suitable.
